Building custom cedar fences in the Seattle area

When we first bought our house in West Seattle, there was no fence separating the front and back yards—you could walk straight from one to the other. That worked fine for a while, but once we got a dog (and later, a child), it made sense to install a fence to keep both from running into the street.

We wanted privacy without feeling completely closed off from the street, so we chose a three-foot lattice fence. We added landscaping for extra privacy, along with an arbor where a hydrangea vine and tea roses could grow.

There are many reasons to build a fence: marking property lines, creating privacy, adding charm and structure, or even increasing your home’s value by making outdoor space more usable. Fence styles vary widely—formal, picket, classic—and so do materials, including wood, metal, vinyl, bamboo, and wrought iron. Some homeowners want full privacy with tall fences, while others are simply looking to add a decorative focal point.

Whatever your needs or aesthetic, Ecoyards can help you design the right fence for your home. We’ve custom-built a wide range of wooden fences and arbors tailored to individual styles, budgets, and functional goals. We specialize in custom woodwork—fences, arbors, trellises, and raised vegetable beds—and we’ll work with you to find the perfect style. Contact us to set up a consultation.

We recently completed a formal-style cedar fence in the Laurelhurst neighborhood. It’s the kind of fence any kid would love—complete with a small Hobbit door (look closely for the black door handle) that lets the homeowners’ children and the neighbors’ kids go back and forth between their yards. It’s not for everyone, but in this case, the families are close, and their kids are used to playing together. The fence offers privacy while still feeling open and welcoming to the neighbors.
